French & Spanish
How we assess students in Key Stage 3.
All students study French in Years 7-9 and Spanish in Year 9. Each term the students learn a new module. The module is then split up into different topics and the students are assessed at the end of each topic. They have roughly 2 lessons to work on the vocabulary and then in their third lesson the students complete a ‘Show Me What You Know’ quiz covering the listening and reading skills. There is also a grammar task they must complete alongside the listening or reading. The students also complete one speaking or writing task each half term.
How we support your child to succeed and where they can access help.
At the end of each half term, after all the assessments are completed and marked, the students analyse their progress and understanding of each topic and give themselves individual next steps for future assessments so that they improve. This is all done on their tracker sheets, with the guidance of the teachers.
We also provide revision sessions for our students where we focus on all of the skills of the exam. Furthermore, if the students are identified by their class teacher as falling behind or needing extra support, they are added to an intervention session after school where they receive 1:2:1 support by the teacher to work on what the students are struggling with at that time. Finally, we are lucky to have a language assistant who takes all students out, either 1:2:1 or in small groups and the focus of this is building confidence in speaking aloud and improving pronunciation.
